FIELD NOTES / AUTHENTICITY

Original surplus or reproduction?

How to read a listing without letting the title do all the work.

Separate the terms

Original issue, surplus, vintage and reproduction describe different things. A reproduction can be a perfectly useful garment, but it should be priced and purchased as a reproduction. Surplus can be relatively recent. Vintage is not evidence of military issue, and an olive color is not proof of either age or origin.

Ask for the label and construction

Request readable photographs of labels, markings, closures, stitching and both sides of the item. Compare those details with a reference for the exact garment or object. A single marking should not settle authenticity: labels can be replaced and repairs can introduce later components. Avoid making a conclusion from one blurred image.

Treat provenance as a separate claim

A story about a veteran or a particular conflict needs supporting records if that story changes the price you will pay. A seller’s account can be sincere without being verifiable. Distinguish visible facts about the object from historical claims that you cannot independently support.

Buy the version you need

For regular wear, fit and fabric may matter more than period correctness. For a collection, documented construction and condition may justify a different choice. Ask the seller to clarify ambiguities before paying. If the listing mixes original and reproduction language, resolve the contradiction or compare another listing.

Put the checklist to work.

Compare the seller’s description with actual-item photos. Resolve missing details before buying.
