What to check before buying surplus boots

A clean upper does not tell you everything about the sole or fit.

Look at more than the upper

Request photos of soles, heels, the lining and the places where leather bends. Ask about cracking, separation, repairs and storage history. Little visible wear does not establish that an older sole will perform well. You cannot fully evaluate footwear from photographs alone.

Clarify the size system

Confirm the marked size, width and country sizing convention. If the seller supplies measurements, ask how they were taken. Compare them with your own well-fitting boots where meaningful, while remembering that exterior length does not equal usable interior length.

Decide how much uncertainty is acceptable

For regular walking, fit and sound construction come before a historical label. For a display collection, wearability may be irrelevant. Do not assume old boots offer protective performance or a temperature rating because of their original purpose.

Read returns and expected costs

Used footwear can be a costly experiment if returns are unavailable or postage is high. Check return terms and shipping before buying. If the listing lacks important condition photos, ask for them; if the seller cannot provide them, compare another pair.
