Buying military surplus on eBay

A practical inspection routine before you commit to a listing.

Start with a use, not a bargain

Decide whether you want a wearable layer, a working bag or a historical collectible. These are different purchases. A jacket with repaired cuffs can be useful clothing while being a poor choice for a collector seeking an untouched example. Write down your must-haves before looking at listings: measurements, material, included components and acceptable wear.

Read the whole listing

The title is only the beginning. Compare the title, condition field, description and photographs. Look for language such as military-style, reproduction, issued and unissued. Ask what the seller means when wording is vague. Determine whether photos show the exact item or a representative example from a batch.

Compare the complete cost

Include shipping and any applicable import charges in your comparison. Check the return policy before bidding or using Buy It Now. A low item price can stop looking attractive once postage and a difficult return are included. Inspect completed or sold listings for comparable condition when available, rather than assuming asking prices establish value.

Ask a focused question

Ask for one missing detail at a time: a label close-up, a flat chest measurement, the underside of a bag, or confirmation that a liner is included. Keep the response in eBay messages. Save the listing information for your own records, and use eBay’s checkout and current buyer-help pages for the transaction.

Put the checklist to work.

Compare the seller’s description with actual-item photos. Resolve missing details before buying.

M-65 field jackets →

[('Choose shell or complete jacket', 'A shell-only listing and a shell with a liner are different purchases. Confirm what is included rather than treating a styled photograph as an inventory of the parcel. Compare the full cost after any missing components.'), ('Use four measurements', 'Request flat chest width, shoulders, sleeve length and back length. Compare them with a jacket you already wear over similar layers. Small Long and Small Regular should not be treated as interchangeable.'), ('Inspect closures and edges', 'Look at cuffs, zipper, snaps, pocket corners and lining. Ask whether photos show the exact jacket. Decide whether repairs suit regular wear or conflict with the kind of example you want for a collection.')]

ALICE packs & frame sets →

[('Inventory the set', 'Confirm the bag, frame, shoulder straps and waist belt separately. A title mentioning a frame may describe compatibility rather than promising a complete assembly. The seller should make the included pieces clear.'), ('Check loaded attachment points', 'Look at strap anchors, bottom corners and frame attachment areas. Ask for interior photographs and information about coatings, odor and storage condition. A front-view photograph cannot show all of these details.'), ('Match the carrying system to you', 'Check dimensions, adjustment range and the empty weight when the seller supplies it. An interesting historical pack and a comfortable daily bag can be different choices. Consider returns if you cannot establish the fit before buying.')]

FOCUSED SHOPPING

Surplus wool blankets →

[('Read the material label', 'Wool can mean a blend. Ask for a readable fiber label and distinguish military-style from seller-described issue blankets. A color or stripe is not proof of material or provenance.'), ('See the whole blanket', 'Request unfolded views of both sides and all edges. Look for thinning, holes, stains and repairs. Ask about odor and storage conditions rather than assuming an unused example has escaped deterioration.'), ('Choose dimensions for the use', 'Measure the space you want to cover. A lap blanket, bed layer and packed camp accessory require different dimensions. Follow care instructions for the known fiber, and do not assume a heavy blanket has a tested warmth rating.')]
