Choosing a surplus wool blanket
Buy the label, measurements and condition, not just the color.
Read the fiber content
A blanket described as wool may be a blend. Ask for the fiber label and do not assume a particular percentage from appearance. Military-style blankets may be modern commercial products. Decide whether that distinction matters for your intended use.
Inspect the whole surface
Ask for photos of the blanket unfolded, including edges and both sides. Look for holes, thin areas, staining and repairs. Ask about odor and storage conditions. A tightly rolled blanket photo is attractive but does not show enough to judge its condition.
Compare usable dimensions
Confirm actual length and width rather than relying on a generic size description. Decide if you need a bed layer, a lap blanket or a camping accessory. Check weight if the seller supplies it, but avoid treating weight alone as a warmth rating.
Plan care before buying
Read any attached care instructions. If they are missing, use guidance appropriate to the known fiber rather than assuming machine washing is safe. Cleaning can alter size or finish. A collectible blanket with uncertain material may deserve different treatment from one bought for regular use.
